Doing it yourself
In the app: open Support, then Security settings, then Delete my account. You will be asked for your password and to confirm.
On the web: sign in and go to Security, then Delete my account.
It takes effect immediately. There is no waiting period and no approval step.
Two things stop it
Money still in your wallet. We will not close an account that is holding your balance, because closing it is not a way for us to keep your money. Spend it, or write to support@garewa.com and we will return it.
A purchase still in flight. Anything still being delivered may yet be refunded to your wallet. Wait for it to settle, which normally takes minutes.
What is erased
- Your name, phone number and email address
- Your password and your transaction PIN
- Saved beneficiaries: the numbers, meters and smartcards you buy for
- Your dedicated account number
- Every notification we sent you, and the record of every SMS and email we sent to your number or address
- Every signed-in device
Your phone number is released, so you can open a new account with it later if you want to.
What is kept, and why
Transactions and wallet entries. Every purchase, credit and debit, with its amount, date and reference.
Why we keep them. They are the financial record of money that actually moved. Nigerian tax and company law require us to hold accounting records, and a dispute months from now is answered from them.
What they no longer say. Nothing in them points back to you: the name, the number and the email address they were attached to have already been erased.
Accounting records are held for six years, after which they are deleted in full.
If you cannot sign in
Write to privacy@garewa.com from the email address on the account, or from any address if you tell us the phone number you registered with. We will verify that the account is yours before we act, and we will do it within 30 days. We will not close an account on the word of somebody who cannot show it is theirs, because that would be a way to take an account off its owner.
